Experts warn AI
threatens
human extinction

We can avert this threat by banning runaway machine intelligence

What is runaway machine intelligence?

The goal of all major AI companies is to develop systems that can operate fully autonomously, without any human direction. The result would be runaway machine intelligence: systems able to overpower any country’s national security forces.

The pace of AI development means runaway machine intelligence could arrive before 2030. No method exists to contain such a system: once developed, it would threaten the lives of everyone on Earth.

The US and its allies must coordinate to prevent its development at home and abroad, including by foreign adversaries like China.

Averting the threat
of human extinction

ControlAI is a nonprofit working to avert the threat of human extinction posed by runaway machine intelligence.

We take a direct approach: we meet everyone in the democratic process, from lawmakers to journalists and citizens, explain the threat in plain terms, and ask them to act.

We brief lawmakers

ControlAI has briefed over 250 congressional offices about the threat runaway machine intelligence poses to every American's life.

We have consulted on the first bill ever introduced in the US Congress to ban development of runaway machine intelligence, which shares core elements of its approach with our discussion draft.

We also work across the UK, Canada and Germany, where we've briefed over 400 lawmakers, and more than 200 have supported our campaigns.

We collaborate with journalists and creators

ControlAI briefs journalists and creators about the threat runaway machine intelligence poses to everyone's lives.

We help creators produce top-tier educational content that reaches millions of viewers.

We appear on outlets like CNN, Fox News, and the BBC, as well as podcasts and other media.

We help people take action

Most people have never been told that runaway machine intelligence threatens their lives. ControlAI informs millions of people help them turn their concern into political action.

We have helped a community of 300,000 people to send over 200,000 messages to their lawmakers, most of them in the US, asking them to pass legislation to ban runaway machine intelligence.

Over 2,000 people have joined our Citizen Groups, where we help them meet their lawmakers in person and urge them to address this threat.

UPDATE · September 8, 2026

The first bill ever introduced to ban runaway machine intelligence

On September 8, 2026, UK lawmaker Alex Sobel MP introduced ControlAI’s bill, the Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill, in Parliament. The bill would ban runaway machine intelligence in the UK, while ensuring the country can still pursue its AI ambitions for economic prosperity and defense.

It would also require the UK to work with other countries toward an international agreement banning runaway machine intelligence worldwide.

The bill is supported by a cross-party coalition of more than 85 lawmakers, who have written to the Prime Minister urging the government to adopt its framework and use the UK’s upcoming G20 presidency to lead a coalition to address the threat of runaway machine intelligence.

Mary Robinson

Fmr President of Ireland; Fmr UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Member of The Elders

"Addressing the risks posed by superintelligent AI cannot be left to voluntary commitments from corporations. In the absence of appropriate guardrails and public support, there's an even-greater need for an international agreement between governments which includes the risks of superintelligent AI. This will help make AI a force for good, not a runaway risk for people and planet. ControlAI is doing vital work informing policymakers about these risks and helping them act to protect humanity."

Lord Browne of Ladyton

Former UK Secretary of State for Defence

"History shows that every breakthrough technology reshapes the balance of power. With Superintelligent AI, the risks of unsafe development, deployment, or misuse could be catastrophic—even existential—as digital intelligence surpasses human capabilities. Control must come first, or we risk creating tools that outpace our ability to govern them."

Anthony Aguirre

Executive Director of FLI, Professor UC Santa Cruz

"At the Future of Life Institute, we've united leading scientists to address humanity's greatest threats. None is more urgent than uncontrolled AI. If we're going to build superintelligent AI, we'd need to ensure that it is safe, controllable, and actually desired by the public first."

Roman Yampolskiy

Professor of Computer Science, University of Louisville

"My life's work has been devoted to Al safety and cybersecurity, and the core truths l've uncovered are as simple as they are terrifying: We cannot verify systems that evolve their own code. We cannot predict entities whose intelligence exceeds our own. And we cannot control what lies beyond our comprehension. Yet the global research community, driven by competition and unrestrained ambition, is rushing headlong to construct precisely such systems. Unless we impose hard limits, now, on the development of recursively self-improving Al, we are not merely risking catastrophic failure. We are engineering our own extinction."

Yuval Noah-Harari

Historian, Philosopher, and Best-Selling Author of 'Sapiens'

"We will not be able to understand a superintelligent AI. It will make its own decisions, set its own goals, and to achieve them it might trick and deceive humans in ways we cannot hope to understand. We are the Titanic headed towards the iceberg. In fact, we are the Titanic busy creating the iceberg. Let's change course and build a future that keeps humans in control."

Stuart Russell

Professor of Computer Science, Berkeley, Director of CHAI; Co-author of the standard textbook for artificial intelligence

"To proceed towards superintelligent AI without any concrete plan to control it is completely unacceptable. We need effective regulation that reduces the risk to an acceptable level. Developers cannot currently comply with any effective regulation because they do not understand what they are building."

Dan Hendrycks

Director of the Center for AI Safety, Advisor for xAI and Scale

"We seriously risk human extinction by building superintelligence. We don’t know of any way to prevent extinction on the current path to superintelligence."

Steven Adler

Ex-OpenAI Dangerous Capability Evaluations Lead

"I worked on OpenAI's safety team for four years, and I can tell you with confidence: AI companies aren't taking your safety seriously enough, and they aren't on track to solve critical safety problems. This is despite an understanding from the leadership of OpenAI and other AI companies that superintelligence, the technology they're building, could literally cause the death of every human on Earth."
